History
Silba is situated 29 knots to the NW from city of Zadar. Old name of the island was Selbo; Croats call it Silba, Italians Selve. Originally its name comes from Latin word Silva which means forest.
Croats probably settled on the island during the 8th century AD. Mostly they raised cattle. During the 15th century they have started with fishing and from the 16th seamanship became the most important occupation. Very important role played the position of Silba along the way from Zadar to Venice. During the 18th century seamanship reached its peak – Silba had over 200 ship owners and captains with more than 150 ships. Stagnation started with new coming steamships and at that time vast migrations started towards North and South America. One of the reasons was peronospora, disease that destroyed vineyards completely.
